Sentence Story Contest!
Hello everyone! As some of you might recognize, this is the Sentence Story that a number of us wrote last year! Thank you all who participated in that! So we only got so far, and I thought it would be fun to have a contest of who could wrap up the story the best! It is only open to you if you participated in writing the original story, so sorry about that, but it's only fair, but don't worry!, I will start another one soon.
All you have to do is write an ending that corresponds to the story and don't change anything that we have already written. The prize is a guest post on my blog (yaya) and if you want, you can start the first sentence of the new Sentence Story that I will be starting after this is over.
I ask that if you participate, send your entry to julya.emmance@gmail.com
by September 27 and good luck! If you have any questions, please comment below and I will answer them as soon as possible. Have fun, and get writing an amazing ending!

The moldy wooden floor creaked as Aria tiptoed toward the kitchen where the meager, but beneficial food was stored. Aria was really craving a piece of strawberry cheesecake. But the sad thing was, Aria was allergic to strawberry cheesecake, so how on earth would she be able to eat the delicacy that she so deeply desired? That explains why she was sneaking to the kitchen, undetected, as far as she knew, to cut herself a slice of her motherās famous cake. Aria didnāt want to get caught though because then she would get punished so she was really careful. She smiled as she opened the knife drawer, she chose her momās cake knife and placed it on the counter.
āCRRRREEEAK.ā
What was that, Aria thought.
āCRREEAK.ā Aria grabbed the knife and got on her hands and knees.
She crawled toward the table and hid under it.
She held her breath.
A stench was growing stronger.
She tilted her head around, OH GREAT, itās probably a dead mouse. She cringed, holding her breath.
She poked her head from under the table and looked out at her kitchen, which was falling apart. No one.
She crawled across the floor, knife gripped in her hand. She got to her feet then suddenly...
Her little sister, Gracie, entered through the doorway, hand on hip, a mischievous expression on her face.
āGee, thanks for scaring me,ā she mumbled āI thought you were a dead mouse.ā
Gracie didnāt say anything, but her tell-tale violet eyes were twinkling; she definitely had been up to something, the question was, what had Gracie done? A thought crossed her mind, but no, that couldn't have been! Exasperated, Aria crossed her arms and simply stared at her little sister for a while before saying, āGracie, if you stole Momās emerald necklace again, you know sheās gonna be mad at you.ā
Gracie stood there and rocked on her heels nervously, āWell.... It was sitting on her dresser and I just put it on to see how it looked and then the clasp got stuck,ā and to finish the speech, she pulled the long necklace from under her baggy shirt to reveal a clasp that was completely broken. Aria didnāt know what to say, that necklace was in place of Momās engagement ring that had been stolen a few years earlier in a Chicago heist.
But something about Gracieās face told her something was wrong, and itās not the usual āI took momās necklace againā kind of thing. After a moment, Gracie whimpered and said, āAria, I didnāt just take Momās necklace, I also stole her diamond earrings and sold them to buy a signed baseball glove for my crush, Erik.ā
Aria was blown away!
āGracie! How could you do this! Mom told you never to touch her jewelry box let alone her actual jewels!ā she exploded.
āBut I want to! They are pretty!ā protested Gracie.
Neither girl spoke for a moment, but finally Aria spoke up, āGracie, you know that was wrong, even if you really like Erik, those jewels were not for you to take, and you need to find some way to make it up to Mom.ā
Gracie knew that she had lost. āI know, but Ar, Erik really means a lot to me and I think he likes me back!ā
Ariaās fiery glare caught Gracie by surprise as she exclaimed, āGracie, thatās the most selfish thing Iāve ever heard in my entire life!ā before storming out of the room, leaving Gracie feeling like she was the most horrible person in the world.
Aria then remembered why she had been in the kitchen in the first place, for the cheesecake of course, turned on her heel, and and made a dramatic āshun her sisterā entrance back into the small room. Aria meticulously cut the tiniest sliver of cheesecake and slid it onto a plate, knowing that she was allergic made her feel the slightest bit guilty.
As she was walking out cake in hand, Gracie whimpered, āAria, please, the clasp! What should I do?ā
Aria turned and glared at her sister before saying, āItās your problem.ā
Tears formed in Gracieās eyes.āPlease help me, Aria! Please!ā she followed Aria, thinking of something, anything, to get her sister to agree to help her. All of a sudden, they heard their momās footsteps coming down the stairs and both girls froze.
āAria? Whatās all that noise down there should I come downsta--wait, where is my diamond earring set?! I left it on my dresser just this morning next to that raffle ticket for the neon hippo figurine collection!ā
Aria glanced at her sister and whispered, āYour problemā again before sliding back upstairs past her mother.
Gracieās violet eyes brimmed with tears as she climbed up the stairs to her mother and in a soft voice murmured, āI took your earrings Mom, and, and, I sold them to buy a present for Erik...ā
Her motherās face turned bright red. āWhat?!ā
āIām so sorry Mom, but I had to! Otherwise he wouldāve asked Emily to the dance instead.ā
āWell, where is the extra money?ā Ariaās mother asked. āAt least Iāll get something out of this,ā she muttered angrily.
āI donāt have it,ā Gracie admitted embarrassedly, scuffing the toe of her fur-trimmed boot on the lowest step.
Gracieās face was downcast and looked extremely forlorn when Aria came back down from upstairs with the empty plate in her hand.
āAnd what have you been eating, Aria?ā asked her mother suspiciously.
āJust some cheesecake,ā Aria replied, suddenly feeling her skin swell up around her face, and she panicked, remembering her allergy.
āOh dear,ā cried her mother. āGracie, go to your room. Weāll talk later. Aria, letās get you some of that allergy medicine on you.ā
Aria then freaked out, her skin was red with itchy hives all over and she regretted every bite of that cake.
āWhy, why do I have to be allergic to strawberries!ā cried Aria.
Aria wanted to itch the hives so badly, and she did so until her arms were starting to bleed and her mom had to shoo away her hands.
āNo, no! Donāt scratch or youāll make it worse,ā said her mom.
She applied the medicine and then added, āNext time, Iāll make a different type of cheesecake so you can enjoy it without all this mess.ā
Aria nodded and her mother shook her head in the direction Gracie had slunk off to once Ariaās allergy attack had begun. āNow, Iām going to have to have a talk with that girl...ā
Gracie went into her bedroom and waited with anxiety, expecting another lecture from her mother.
Aria came in instead, holding Gracieās cat, Mittens, and gave Gracie a long look that said: āI donāt know what you thought you could do in selling Momās jewels, but I forgive you.ā
āAria, can you leave us alone for a moment?ā said their mother.
Aria nodded knowingly before exiting the room, leaving Mittens to keep Gracie company during her ābig talkā.
Their mother turned back to Gracie and asked, āWhy on earth did you do such a thing? I didnāt teach my kids to be thieves.ā
Gracie swallowed nervously and choked out the words, āBut--but Mom, I--I didnāt mean to steal it, I just needed something, anything, to come up with so that Erik wouldnāt ask Emily to the dance, but so that he would ask me!ā
āMom,ā Aria stuck her head in the door, āDonāt you remember you and Dadās love? How that felt?ā
āWhat?ā Gracie asked, āWhat happened with you and Dad, and how come you never told me about this?ā
āAria, please, Iām trying to give a speech here and youāre not exactly helping my case; Iāll tell you about that little ālove storyā some other time, now shoo, you!ā Her mother commanded, giving her āthe lookā.
Aria walked back into her room and her mom continued her lecture at Gracie with a disappointed look on her face.
What surprised Gracie the most about her dreaded speech was that when her mother started to speak to her, her mother just cracked up laughing.
āWhatās so funny?ā Gracie asked, a puzzled expression on her face.
āOh, Gracie, my mother gave me the exact same speech when I was just a little older than you!ā Mother remembered.
āWhy? Tell me, Mom!ā Gracie nearly yelled.
Gracie was starting to think her mom was crazy.
āWell your father and I, he was the most popular boy in school and I, well I, was a nothing.ā
āMom, donāt say that! Youāre the best mom Iāve ever had! I mean you canāt have been that much of a nobody! Dad still married you anyway,ā Gracie exclaimed.
āOkay, honey. The point is, donāt go bribing a guy to choose you. I tried that once with my first crush and I ended up losing him anyway.ā
āBut Erik wouldāve--ā
āI know, youāre going to say that Erik wouldnāt think of it as bribing, but rather as a gift, but do you really think that if you gave him a present heād choose you over Emily for that reason alone? If so, then heās really just a very materialistic person and I wouldnāt waste my time on him,ā Mom said wisely.
Gracie didnāt know what else to say.
āGracie, I know Erikās special to you, but you canāt buy love. Thatās just the way it works. Iām sorry,ā said Gracieās mom after a long pause.
In that instant, they heard Aria fart in her room.
And Aria heard Gracie shout. āEWWW!ā
āHere goes another one,ā said Aria proudly, as though farting was her true talent and now she was able to show it off to the world.
āWay to kill the āMom-Daughter bonding moment, Ar,ā Gracie hollered to her sister, giggling as Aria let another onslaught of farts echo throughout the house.
āYes, and Iām in the middle of a speech here, Aria!ā cried their mother.
āSorry!ā Aria called back, āI canāt hold it in! Itās too much!ā
āWell, then, go outside and do it!ā
Aria exited the area, leaving Gracie and their mother vacate the premises just as the smell wafted into the room.
Just then the phone rang and the caller ID said.... Erik?
Before her mom answered the phone in Gracieās room, Gracie heard Aria outside say, āI canāt stop! Thanks for those mixed beans, mom!ā
Gracie started giggling again, uncontrollably this time, and she was still laughing when she heard her mom say, āHello? Who is this?ā
A muffled voice on the other side told her it was Erik and he was calling for Gracie.
Gracieās mother mouthed the word Erik and Gracie gasped and then squealed, very quietly, as the phone was handed over, āHello, this is Gracie! As in the Gracie!ā
āUh, hi, Gracie, this is Erik. You know that baseball mitt you got me? Well, Emily got me a signed baseball, so Iām still not really sure about who Iām going to the dance with...but I think you should know, I like basketball, and if someone was to get my ball signed, I might be willing to ask that someone to the dance...ā
Gracie hesitated, and, remembering what her mother had told her, said, āYou know what Erik, you know I like you but I donāt want someone to like me because of materialistic things. Go ahead and take Emily. Iām sure Emily can buy you better things than I can anyway since her dadās the richest guy on the planet. Goodbye, Erik.ā
āWait, Gracie, to tell you the truth, I didnāt know who to ask, but now I know who. This was just my test, to see who was a āmaterialisticā lover and who would stand up to me and you passed! Gracie, will you come to the dance with me?ā
Gracie was speechless! She stood there in shocked silence for so long that Erik finally spoke up and said, āGracie? Are you still there? Hello? Gracie?ā
āUm, yeah, sorry Erik. I would love to go to the dance with you!ā
āThanks, Gracie. I was really nervous to ask you, but Iām feeling fine now. Do you want to come to my house afterwards to celebrate with our families?ā
āOkay! Iād really like to meet your parents.ā There was a long pause.
āMy parents?ā asked Erik. āI mean, yeah, that sounds great. Got to go. Bye.ā Something in Erikās voice told Gracie he was hiding something. But what?
Little did Gracie know was that Erikās dad was in a wheelchair and his mom was nearly blind in both of her eyes and he was very sensitive toward that.
āEEEEH!ā Gracie squealed even though something seemed a little fishy.
āSo...did he ask you to the dance?ā Gracieās mom asked--her voice did not sound happy. āBecause, Gracie, if he did, I donāt think you should go with him, because it probably means he only likes you for your things...ā
āNo, Mom,ā Gracie said, āthat was a test! Oh, and also, he invited us over for a ācelebrationā afterwards.ā
Gracieās mom looked at her with suspicion then smiled, āOk, I guess you may go! Iāll bake a cheesecake to bring along for the ācelebration!āā
āMom, you donāt bake cheesecake,ā Aria pointed out loudly from her room where some farts were still going on.
In that moment, Aria leaned against the wall, outside of Gracieās room, and farted again, sending a powerful vibration and scared her mom, thinking it was an earthquake or a tornado.
āAria!ā Her mother playfully yelled, āIf I hear that one more time--ā and Aria came out from behind the bathroom door with a whoopie cushion, laughing her face off.
āAw, come on mom. You know itās funny. When it smells, then that is when it is not fun.ā
āAr,ā Gracie whined, āWe were just celebrating my success-āāHE ASKED YOU?ā Aria nearly yelled, a huge grin on her face.
Gracie nodded smugly. āYep,ā
āSo are you going to go?ā
āI donāt know. What do you think?ā
āAre you kidding? Go!ā
āYes, I am kidding. I said Iād love to go with him.ā
Gracie continued, āAnd, weāre having a potluck afterwards to celebrate and Brad will be there!ā
Aria blushed because Brad was Erikās older brother and she was in love. āWhat?ā
āI said, Brad will be there. ā
āI know, I know. But what does Brad have to do with me?ā
āOh for crying out loud Aria!ā their mother said. āWe all know you like him!ā
āWell still, Iām not going to the dance with him. Because Troy already asked me and guess what I said?ā
āDid you say yes?ā
āNo of course not. He had already asked Ashlyn, Brad and Erikās sister.ā
Gracie groaned. āCome on, Ar. Youāre single, lonely, pathetic, solo...must I go on?ā she teased.
āNah, you donāt have to. Mom? Can we go out for dinner tonight? To celebrate my success? Iāll tell you the reason that Iām not single and lonely like Gracie thinks.ā
Gracie raised her eyebrows teasingly and said, āOoh la la! Arās got a whole batch of secret boyfriends for us to discuss! How lovely!ā
āYeah, except youāre not going.ā
āWhat?ā Gracie protested giving her mother an incredulous look. āMom!ā
āI said no,ā repeated her mom, giving her another look.
āOkay, okay, I guess Iāll just have to stay home...all alone...no one here but me...ā
āOh stop being such a drama queen!ā Aria said rolling her eyes.
āIt wonāt be so bad actually,ā Gracie noted, wiggling her eyebrows. āIāll be able to invade your room, Aria, and snoop through all of your stuff which probably includes notes from your secret boyfriends professing their undying love for you!ā
āYeah right. I donāt have any secret boyfriends Iām just one of the most popular girls at school. And weāll hire a babysitter. Right Mom?ā
Yes. And weāll also...ā She was interrupted by the phone ringing.
āI donāt need a babysitter since Iām not a baby,ā Gracie growled while her mother said hello to whoever it was on the other end of the telephone.
āGirls, enough!ā cried their mother.
The girls stopped fighting just in time to hear the person on the other end of the phone say that their mother had won the raffle for the neon hippo figurine collection.
What they didnāt know was that collection would change their lives forever.
Aria and their mother went out to dinner that night and Aria told her mother that someone special had asked her out instead and had a wonderful time together.
But when the neon hippoās arrived later that night, the delivery man was none other than the father that they havenāt seen in six years because their parents were divorced.
Gracie and Ariaās mother and father stood shocked in the doorway. Finally, the girlās mother was able to utter āB-B-Brian?ā
āDaddy?ā Gracie squealed, āYouāre home!?ā
Gracie and Ariaās father looked just as shocked to see them as they were to see him, āNo, Gracie. No, Iām not. Hereās your package.ā He said and he rushed out of the door.
āDad? Dad, wait! Stop!ā Aria cried, dropping her patchwork purse on the muddy driveway and bolting after her fatherās UPS truck, just as it was starting to pull away from their house as fast as a UPS truck can possibly go.
āDad!ā Aria cried one last time. Her father drove off and didnāt look back.
āDaddy?ā Gracieās voice was a mix of both hurt and relief; she didnāt know what to think when she saw her father get out of the UPS truck, and she still didnāt know what she thought.
Meanwhile their mother had opened the box and taken out the contents. Her face went pale as she pulled out the first small hippo. A strange feeling overcame her. āI canāt believe it,ā she whispered, staring at the small blue figurine. āItās identical to the one he gave me on...on...ā Our first date, she finished in her head.
The girls heard a clunk as their mother fainted.
āMum?ā Aria and Gracie said.
āWhatās going on Ar?ā Gracie asked.
āI donāt know, hold on,ā she said, walking to the kitchen and returning with a cup of ice cold water splashing it on their momās face.
āGracie, go call 9-1-1. Iāll see if I need to do CPR.ā
āWait, Gracie?ā Aria said, āNever mind, sheās waking up.ā
Their momās eyes fluttered a few times getting used to the light, and then she sat up revealing a note that had fallen out of the box before she had fainted.
āWhatās that Mom?ā Gracie asked.
āI donāt know, Gracie, but Iād assume that itās from your dad, I donāt know if I want to open this, but maybe thereās an explanation of why he left us in the first place. I guess weāll find out!ā and she tore open the envelope. Her face went white.
āMom? Mom, what is it? MOM!ā Ariaās voice cut through to their motherās ears, snapping her out of her daydream.
āHow dare he give me these!ā cried their mother. āThis is very dangerous!ā
āWhat is it, Mom? Tell us!ā Gracie pleaded.
āIt says, āEnclosed in the box is--ā
Their mom was interrupted as they heard pounding on the door and a whole bunch of voices yelling, āOpen up, this is the FBI and we have a warrant to arrest anyone who is in this house!
āMom? Gracie worried. āWhat is it?ā
āEnclosed in this box are all your fatherās fake IDās. Girls, he says that he left us because he got caught up in the wrong group and made a mistake by having you two. He couldnāt stay because for one, he never loved any of us--ā their mother covered her mouth with her hand, āand he was in danger being in one place for so long.ā Their mother let a sob escape her lips.
āMom?ā Gracie and Aria asked together.
āHe also says that he couldnāt have one more thing against him so he gave the IDās to us... he knew the police were coming after him and we were the nearest place. He had no idea we lived here.ā They were all was crying openly now.
āWhy did he have to hurt us yet another time?ā Aria asked as the FBI burst in.
Gracie and Aria screamed as FBI agents grabbed them and pulled them to opposite sides of the room.
The FBI agents glared at each of them in turn, two of them with their arms locked around Ariaās and Gracieās necks, and then quoting a particular book, said in unison, āWe donāt want to hurt you, but we will if we have to.ā And thatās when Aria started kicking furiously at the nearest agent screaming all sorts of particularly nasty words.
āStop Aria!ā their mother yelled from across the room, āPlease, officers, we didnāt do anything. Can we talk about this over a hot cup of coffee?ā
āI promise, you, nothing is our fault. Itās our fatherās fault. Just let us explain!ā Gracie reasoned.
āFine, but donāt I donāt want any funny business,ā the officers let go of them.
āOkay, Iāll explain,ā said their mother. āThe girlās father and my divorced husband cam and left us this box of fake IDās. He didnāt know we lived here. His name is Brian Michaels. My name is Nicole Dean and these are my daughters, Aria and Grace Dean.ā
āAnd where is the proof that you are telling the truth?ā
She pulled out the box and the letter from Brian.
He read the paper and said, āMaāam, do you have any idea where Brian Michaels is now, or where he was heading?āāAll I know is that he went north, towards Canada, but I donāt know exactly where he was going.ā
āWeāll have to do a background check on you and your daughters before we let you off the hook completely, but if what you say is true, we wonāt bother you again.ā
He turned to the other officer and added, āLetās track him down boys.ā

Hahah. I had that one line, "Tears formed in Gracieās eyes.'Please help me, Aria! Please!' She followed Aria, thinking of something, anything, to get her sister to agree to help her."
ReplyDeleteI meant to write more, but I was on my iPad and it was giving me a rough time. :\
The story turned out great though!
Ah Abbi! That was a great line ;) Feel free to participate because you did technically help with the original work, no matter how short it was ;)
DeleteHaha, thanks.(:
DeleteI will, it sounds fun!
It seems fun, but I'm not going to enter :(. I'm a little too busy. Good luck to everyone who does enter!
ReplyDeleteOh that's totally fine, I understand. I've taken on a lot this year too, it being my 8th grade year! I barely find time for blogging in all of this! I think it'll be fun though to see what others do!
DeleteYay, I remember this! This was so much fun! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'll be able to do it either. It was fun though!

DeleteIt certainly was fun doing the sentence story, but being swamped with studying and other whatnot, I'll be too busy to type up an entry.
ReplyDelete...I feel like some of the sentences changed from the original. I don't remember there being fart earthquakes. o_o
I know the feeling. There was a "farting earthquake" but I didn't remember that it was so dramatic! ;)
DeleteI forgot about the farting part... :P
