My Top 8 Jams of 2014

I'd definitely been depending pretty heavily on music while studying for exams, and I made a playlist for myself of all my favorite songs. I want to share my top eight/need to hear songs of many genres of right now!

Click on the title to listen to it. It will either take you to YouTube or Grooveshark and if you don't know how to use Grooveshark, that's ok. It should play automatically, but if it doesn't, all you have to do is click "play song." You shouldn't have to make an account or anything!

Human by Christina Perri

Do not turn this song off right away. I admit it, it's boring and repetitive at the beginning, but YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CHORUS! As soon as it hits the chorus, my breath is whooshed away and I just still there in a silent stupor until the song is over. Just give it a minute. You'll love it.

Pompeii by Bastille

I would be surprised if you haven't heard this song. I don't really have anything special to say about it, but the song is quality stuff. I think I mostly like it because it doesn't have your typical sound to it and listening to it is a good change from the normal.
The video honestly has nothing that I can see to do with the song, but I have to say, the scenery is gorgeous!

Sampson by Regina Spektor

I don't know about this song or the words. Like seriously though, what in the world does it mean? "Sampson went back to bed, not much hair left on his head, He ate a slice of wonderbread and went right back to bed." Can anyone explain this line to me? And also, "The history books forgot about us and the Bible didn't mention us." Who is the us?
Grr. Frustrating. However, through the frustration, I can't seem to stop listening to it! Her voice is beautiful.

Let Her Go by Passenger

This song is very popular on the radio right now. It's played a lot, but that is not a bad thing because I honestly crank the volume and belt it out every time it comes on in the car. Literally. Ask my mom, she doesn't exactly approve of my loud music, but this song definitely deserves a little extra amplification.
*I didn't watch the whole video, so please let me know if there is anything questionable in it. Thanks :)

Say Something by A Great Big World

This is a beautiful song! Love the piano intro. There are actually two versions of it, one with just the guy (which I have linked), and another featuring Christina Agulara. Alex and Sierra sang it on the xfactor (you can watch their performance at about 4:00, so skip ahead if you don't want to watch the rest) and it is probably the cutest thing I've ever seen. They're both so overjoyed about winning and you can just see their love for each other. I tear up when I watch them and I can only hope to find that kind of love some day ;)

The Heart of Dixie by Danielle Bradberry

I watched Danielle's journey on The Voice and was rooting for her the whole time. She actually ended up winning the competition at only 16 years old, which is amazing. I love her voice and, in my opinion, she is a very humble person about her fame. She just seems so down to earth!

Let It Go by Idina Menzel

What can I say? It's Disney! They've done a great job with the new movie and I can't get the soundtrack out of my head. This song is by far my favorite from Frozen. Enjoy!

Don't Forget Where You Belong by One Direction

I know there are a lot of stereotypes of One Direction, but love or hate them, I think this song deserves a listen. It tells their story of being on the road all the time how hard it is to be away from their families and familiar surroundings. They share how important it is to them not to forget who they are and where they come from. The chorus says,
"Don't forget where you belong, home
Don't forget where you belong, home
If you ever feel alone, don't
You were never on your own
And the proof is in this song."
I just love that. It's almost like their own reminder to themselves that they'll always have each other for support :) Ahh fangirl.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know what some of your favorite songs are so I can give them a try. What do you think of mine?
Love,
July

    2. I've heard Regina Spektor because a song of hers is in the end of a Narnia movie and I liked the song, but other than that, I've only heard let it go and I only know of one direction, so that's two songs I like, three I know about........

    3. Hahaha, you and I listen to totally opposite types of music.

  3. I'm a HUGE fan of all Regina Spektor! I think that in Samson she's talking from the perspective of Delilah. She's telling her side of the story of how "I loved you first" means that she loved him before he loved her. I think that Spektor is actually telling the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah. There is a lot more off the of the first comment from this site: http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858508556/
that helped me understand the words from the song.

I know Regina because of Narnia. I love the soundtrack The Call, I tried to search all her songs. She is just so beautiful. Her personality, voice, and lyric, and piano, and her music. I love to see her classic style in fashion and music.

    1. Basically all of that that you just mentioned are songs that I wanted to put on there but didn't because I didn't want to overwhelm everybody with all those songs! We have similar music taste :D

    2. Do you know Hayley Westenra? She is an amazing New Zealander (ish? ese?) singer.

Also, For The First Time In Forever (Reprise and original)

    4. She isn't very well known but she has an amazing voice. Two of her best songs are Across The Universe Of Time and Dark Waltz.

I'm going to see Frozen for the second time tomorrow. That is one of the best movies ever.

    5. I love the song title "Dark Waltz :) Sounds mysterious!

Ah, yay! Did you hear they were coming out with a sing-a-long version in theaters?

      Delete
    6. Yes! I kind of wanted to go to that but it was my little sister's birthday and she was getting tired of me singing the songs all the time. Plus she had friends over. I ended up singing along quite a bit. :)

Let it Go is great! I personally prefer Idina's version, but both are amazing.
Two of my favorite songs are Clarity by Zedd and Counting Stars by OneRepublic :)

    1. Classical is good, but I tend to lean towards music with singing. If you could suggest one classical piece for me to listen to, what would it be?

I agree with you on Let It Go. I love Counting Stars!

    2. I love the YouTube channel called thepianoguys, they do classical interpretations of music with lyrics! They're really amazing~ I suggest this one, it's of A Thousand Years by Christina Perri: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgaTQ5-XfMM

They also have One Direction, as I've gathered you're a fan of that band ;) I personally love Tchaikovsky, especially The Nutcracker, but that's not for everyone haha

    3. Ohh, I feel like I've heard of them from somewhere.... Thanks for sharing a link :)

Yes, I love One Direction and I will be looking for those covers because, well, why wouldn't I?

We played the excerpts from the Nutcracker in band last year and I loved it! I also grew up watching Barbie and the Nutcracker which I absolutely loved. Have you seen it?
